Have you smiled today?

Shoe Addict?

"I had the blues because I had no shoes until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet."- Denis Waitley

I've never been a girl that likes shoes!
Gasp. I know!

Clothes - I LOOOVEEE them!
Purses - a bit obsessed.
but shoes -- they just don't do it for me!
well. they didn't.
I'm not a tennis shoes with jeans girl - eww.
but I do wear my trusty jack rogers with everything!

I just couldn't succumb myself to hours of pain.
Beauty is NOT pain in my world.
BUT
I think I'm becoming a shoe addict
(much to my husband's dismay.)
haha.

In one day

I bought these ...

and these

and these

I know - a little overboard.
But they were all so cute!
I couldn't pick just one pair.

and I needed them.
no, really - I did.

So what do you think?
Have I caved to the world of uncomfortable shoes?

Am I officially a shoe addict?

An afternoon treat!

6 days until I leave for Newport ....
and I'm BORED!!!

I should be cleaning but no thanks.
I should be packing but I don't want too.
I should take Niles out to pee but I'm lazy!
I could play with Nelson but he's sleeping.
I could be house searching but i'm over it.

so ... what's a bored girl to do?
EAT! duh.

I raided my mom's pantry!
and look what I found!!!!

I'm pretty sure Wednesday afternoons don't
get any better than s'mores! YUM!

It's the simple things people, the simple things!

One handed wonder!

Some may say that Nelson is a little spoiled.
But I don't like that word.

"they" swear you can't spoil a baby!
(not sure who "they" is)

but I prefer to think that ...
1. He's just so smart he knows EXACTLY what he wants!
(and he wants it RIGHT THEN!!)

or
2. He has very "high expectations" of people. :)

Either way -- spoiled or not, the boy LOVVESS to be held!
All the time!
(which i don't mind because he's SOO cuddly and cute
but sometimes a girl's gotta get stuff done!)

Therefore, I have mastered the art of
doing everything with one hand!

and i mean everything ...

loading/unloading the dishwasher,
switching laundry (folding is still a bit challenging!),
vacumming,
other miscellaneous cleaning tasks,
eating (cutting a steak with one hand is tough!)
and even clothes shopping!
(you try buttoning your pants with one hand)
It's not as easy as it sounds!!

It's amazing the things motherhood teaches you!
Who knew I was such a one-handed whiz?

ONE WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YUP, YOU HEARD ME RIGHT -
ONE WEEK!
As in SEVEN days!!
(that is sweet sweet music to my ears!!)

7 days from today
I'll be packing up the 'ol car
and hitting the road
with my trusty sidekick
and favorite little traveler,Nelson.

Where are going this time, you ask?
TO GO SEE DADDY!!!
(I thought this day would never come!)

It's been 93 days people ...
and we are SOOOO ready!!!

You see, Nelson & I...
we're just like Bonnie and Clyde.
Taking on the open road ...

Except we don't rob banks!

Look out Rhode Island,
because here we come!!!

Breaking the Bank!

Confession: I am obsessed with HGTV!
(pearls, HGTV and a million other things but I'm sure I will blog on those later)

BUT ... HGTV is breaking my bank!
Every show I watch -- I just want EVERYTHING!

I want a designer kitchen fit for Southern Living.
I'm picturing beautiful white cabinets, a glass backsplash, granite island.
I want a modern, simplistic perfect living area with sharp lines.
I want a collage of picture frames everywhere.
Fabulous Curtains.
I want a color scheme of red, ivory and light blue.
I just want it all!!

Well - unfortunately, my bank account can't handle "everything".
I'm supposed to "live within my means".
What does that even mean, anyways??

Well, according to CNN Money,
it means "not buying stuff you can't afford".
Simple enough! Credit Cards are BBAADD! I know that.
But what if I CAN afford it - but don't really need it and should save instead?
Yeah ... see .... that's my problem!!!!
Savings Smavings! :(

"I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet!"

My husband thinks we should "live below our means".
To that I say - slow down over acheiver ...
I'm still adjusting to the first part, haha! :)

The reason for this post??
We are house hunting in Pensacola ....
and we are discussing the options of
 living below our means,
within our means and
 above our means!

I think we're going to play it smart/safe this time around! :)
It's a starter home ... we're a starter family!
It's a perfect fit!!

Looks like I'll just have to make it adorable with all my craft projects!!
I'll finally get to make all the great things in my "oneday someday" folder!!

Pearls! Pearls! Pearls!

"The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens."
Author Unknown

I have a confession: I LOOVVEEE pearls!
(hint hint George, Mom, family, friends - haha)

Real Pearls, Fake Pearls, Earrings, Necklaces, Bracelets, Cultured Pearls, Freshwater Pearls, Pink Pearls, Perfect Pearls - I just love them all.

I think they have this perfect unperfectness about them.
They come in all shapes, sizes, colors - I just love them!
I think they embody class and timeless beauty.
(and who doesn't want to represent that?)
Just some of my pearl collection!

My mom went to California a few weeks ago
and came hom with the most amazing Mother's day present for me!!
She bought this bracelet and dangling earrings from a lady in San Diego!

Aren't they marvelous?

Well - the other night I was feeling crafy ...
but my sewing machine is in storage -
so my craft adventures are limited!
(can you say WITHDRAWL?)
I found an old pearl bracelet that I never wear.

My mom's gift inspired me.
I looked at the earrings and thought "I can do that".

So, I headed to Michaels ...
and 45 minutes later --
I had these!!

I quite like them!! :)

I can't wait to make more!
Now I can take jewelry making off the "oneday someday" list.

The Unplanned Planner.

I'm a planner.
I love lists.
I lose lists.
Then I make new lists.

I make plans.
Then I change plans.
Then I make new plans.

I can't live without my calender.
But when something changes -
I have to make a new one.
Because I like it to stay neat and "accurate".

Yes, this makes me crazy.
I've accepted it! You should too.

However....
The Navy isn't much for planning.
 AT ALL.
George graduates on May 28th ... yes, like in 17 days!!

What are we doing after?
Well - we are moving to Florida.
Penscaola to be exact.
We think.

We don't have official orders yet.
Apparently that is pretty common!
We may not get them until May 28th ...
and then we may only have 4 days to get there.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
BREATHE. WHITNEY. BREATHE.

So the ... Where? When? How?
Who? What?

All those things are unknown ....

But, I do have ...
  • '9 houses that are for rent' list.
  • a "logistics of getting a newborn, a dog, 2 lovebirds (that's George & I) and all our 'junk' (including $3000 worth of Navy uniforms) to Florida" list.
  • a "logistics of getting all of our furniture, clothes, CAR from Texas to Florida" list.
  • a "how to convince George we need a bigger car pros/cons" list.
  • a "oneday someday craft idea" folder that is about to pop!
and I have this intense NEED to feel in control and plan.

I think this is God's way of telling me to take a chill pill
AND TRUST HIM!!

So, now I'm going to turn off the TV (goodbye for now HGTV), crank up some Bob Marley ("every little things gonna be alright" seems appropriate) and snuggle with my sweet little baby!

because no matter what happens or where I am ...
I have a wonderful husband, a beautiful healthy baby boy
and a very supportive family!
I'm a very lucky, loved preppy lady.

My Crush ...

This is him!
Isn't he handsome!?

He's been away since March 7th ...
Kicking butt at Officer Candidate School.

Our countdown started with 90 days ...
we are down to 17 days!!

So that handsome boy, second from the left, that's George! :)

and come on ...
17 days is sooo do-able!!!
or is it??

Some weeks seemed to drag on for years, other weeks flew by, and now ... well now i'm in a purgatory of sorts ... I feel this sense of complete amazement & excitement that I get to see him in 2.5 weeks - combined with a severe impatience because we still have 17 days left!!
Seriously - its been FOREVER!!
I miss him. I need him. I love him.

But at least now he has his cell phone -
so we can chat like we did when we were dating!!
Thus - I have a new crush on my husband!
but - luckily for him, life is getting a little better up there!!

Some highlights:
- They get to eat with FORKS!
(The first 9 weeks they could only use a spoon)

"We had lambchops for Easter ... try eating that with a spoon".

- They can have coffee, sweets, go to the bathroom without escorts, put salad dressing on their salad and yell at the new guys :)

- THEY GET TO USE THEIR CELL PHONES!
This is by far the best privilege! I missed his voice!

In 14 days, I will be packing the car and heading to Newport!
I can't WAIT to see him in his dress uniform!
I get a little teary eyed just thinking about his first salute as a commissioned Naval Officer!!

I'm already a proud Navy Wife.
and George's biggest fan!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day!

That precious little boy is the reason my heart beats!!
What a wonderful first Mother's Day it was!

"Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him."
- Psalm 127:3

Make your own CORNHOLE!!

My little Sister Lane graduated (with honors!) from the College of Charleston on Saturday!
Congrats Lane!
(Lane & I at her graduation party!)

What's the perfect preppy gift for the party sister??

I wanted to get her something special (and unique) for graduation - something that she would actually use!! For those of you who don't know Lane - she's awesome, she LOVES summer, being outside and having fun!

Cornhole would be perfect!!

I went to go buy her one and they were $200!!! (Not that she isn't worth $200 - she is ... but we are about to move and I'm saving all my money for decorating - I've see lots of fabric and paint in my future. My "oneday someday" file on the computer is getting ridiculously long)  So I started googling instructions for DIY Cornhole games and headed to Lowe's!! I mean - how hard can it be? right? wrong ...

I had them cut all the wood the right size for me. They have that amazing HUGE saw that makes everything so perfect! :) It was definitely worth waiting for an HOUR in the heat for that part! Then I headed home to stain the pieces! I opted for stain rather than paint - but you could paint them as well!

Once the stain dried, I pulled out the instructions to get started. For some reason it looked way more complicated once all the pieces (carriage bolts, flat washers, etc) were in front of me! So I called my uncle and he GRACIOUSLY enlisted his services, sweat, man-power and pick-up Truck!

One hour later -- we had this ....

Then I added her monogram (every good southern graduation gift includes a monogram) and made some matching Cornhole Bean Bags out of Duck Cloth!

VOILA - she's ready for summer!!

She will certainly be the life of the party!!

Some things I learned ...

1. I'm not quite the carpenter I hope to be (or assumed I was)!
2. Staining wood is HARD - and MESSY!
3. Patience is not my greatest quality.
4. Nelson isn't much for sharing my attention with projects that don't benefit him. :)
