I found this little piece of scrap wood laying on the floor the other day --
and I instantly had this random idea.
I wanted to make a cute crayon holder for the boys.
I wanted something where they would be able to see the colors, something that would enable us to discuss the colors while they were coloring. (I'm all about sneaky learning opportunities!) Something that would encourage fine motor skills by placing the crayons back in the holes. Something that looked organized and something that I could use as "decoration" as well as function.
Wow. Now that I think about it, that's a lot of demands from such a little block of wood.
But surprisingly, I managed to achieve it all. ;)
I started with this ...
and used a pencil and a ruler to mark where I wanted my 24 holes.
Then I used a 3/8 inch spade bit to drill my holes.
I didn't want the holes to be so small that the boys would be frustrated so this size was perfect.
I sanded it down (no splinters!)
and used some leftover stain to match the shelf in the playroom.
and Ta Da! a super simple Crayon holder! ;)
p.s. my holes are crooked and totally not even.
clearly I wasn't a math major. ;)
but the boys LOVE it anyways ....
and apparently this little block is as yummy as it is cute! ;)
and the good news is that this little crayon holder does all of the things I wanted...
It's functional.
It's "educuational".
and it's CUTE!
{which let's be honest, that's all I really care about!)
Oh and it only took about 5 minutes to make - start to finish. ;)
and it was free.
the best kind of project in my book!

What a cute idea!! Very innovative!
